Diamond Jubilee Celebrations – 4th June 2012

The village of Ley Hill is to stage a spectacular event on their common as plans get under for next years Diamond Jubilee.

The beacon, that is such a familiar sight as you drive into the village, has been the first in the country to be registered with her Majesty’s Pageant Master and will become part of a beacon lighting chain across the British Isles.  Neil Lamond (01494 774996) is leading a large team of local people who have offered their help to bring about this community celebration for “60 Glorious Years”.

A stage review of that name is planned as part of the afternoon show along with a large range of other attractions including steam traction engine rides, bungee jumping, marching band, St George and the Dragon pageant, hot air balloon rides, vintage bicycle display, classic cars and tractors and lots more.

Neil hopes to arrange that vintage London Transport country buses will run a free service from Chesham, Amersham and Bovingdon to bring people to the show in period style. No parking on Ley Hill Common will be available so this will be a great way to get visitors to the event.

Another interesting feature that is in the planning is a Ley Hill “History Zone” to be held in the Village Memorial Hall. Neil would welcome anyone getting in touch with him if they have any Ley Hill related articles, particularly old photographs and small artefacts.  Inside the hall is a memorial plaque to all those men from the village who gave their lives in the two world wars, if you have a photograph (however small) of any of those individuals this would be most helpful as they are trying to create a dedication sheet to each of them.

In the evening there will be outdoor live music in front of the pubs, followed by the beacon lighting and fireworks. The event will be free but a bucket collection will be made in order to cover some of the outlay.
