Farm Units – A TVP Alert

In an effort to utilise the full financial potential of farms, many farmers have now diversified. One of the main new sources of income has been to develop farm outbuildings and turn them into work units that can be rented out to small businesses. Whilst this may be a welcome cash boost it also brings with it certain dangers which, as landlords, you need to be aware of.

Farm units tend to be located in very rural areas. Passing traffic is limited to a few vehicles and, generally, they cannot be observed from the road. Unfortunately, some people may see these premises as being ideal for carrying out illegal activities relying on the fact that the isolation of the premises will make it difficult for their activities to be discovered. Such activity could range from the production of illegal drugs, the disposal or stripping of stolen vehicles or plant and, in rare cases, activities that may be linked to terrorism. Whilst this last activity is extremely rare, we are asking farmers and owners of outbuildings that are rented out to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the police. Below are listed some activities that we would be particularly keen to hear about:

• Any large deliveries or thefts of chemicals or fertiliser
• We would like to know about any new businesses that approach you to rent land or work units where you have some reason to be suspicious of them, even if you have turned them away.
• If you visit a unit and you see articles which do not seem to be in keeping with the business of the renting company, tell us about it.
• If a unit is using an excessive amount of electricity, inform us straight away.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, and we would encourage you to contact us about any activity you feel is suspicious.

The overwhelming majority of small business and individuals that rent farm outbuildings do so for perfectly lawful purposes but we would encourage you to ask yourself “do I know what my tenants are engaged in on my property”.

By remaining vigilant and being aware of the activities that are being carried out within the rural communities, we can ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer.

If you have any information, please call Thames Valley Police on 101 and state that you are responding to this Thames Valley Alert.

Alternatively, if you do not wish to give your details, you can call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
